Durban is one of the most populated cities in South Africa. It also has the distinction of being the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and is widely acknowledged as the busiest port in Africa. The city's warm subtropical climate and beautiful beaches, have made it a popular tourist destination.

  • Durban Beaches
    Durban boasts of spectacular, wide beaches. Here you can relax in the sun and enjoy the natural beauty, while the more adventurous can choose to indulge in water sports. Perfect for families vacationing together.
  • Golden Mile
    This 6 km strip along the Durban beach front, offers a number of options for those looking for fun and entertainment. Golden Mile is famous for its amusement parks, cafeterias, bars, pubs and discos. Here locals and tourists can enjoy a ride in the famed Durban rickshaws, discover the thrill of a helicopter flip or listen to classic music from open-air symphony orchestras
  • Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World
    This entertainment hub is located at one end of the Golden Mile. Besides the casino, Suncoast features restaurants, a beach bar, movie halls and its own private beach, recognized as one of the best 3 beaches in South Africa. The complex is styled after the traditional art deco heritage, that can be seen in many places in Durban.

  • Seaworld (Dolphinarium) 
    The Seaworld gives you the opportunity to go through an underground tunnel to a huge aquarium, where you can see seals and dolphins frolicking around.
  • Jumma Mosque 
    Located near the lively city centre, this mosque enjoys the distinction of being the largest mosque in the southern hemisphere and is famed for its beauty.
  • Natal Sharks Board
    Natal Sharks Board is the  place meant for those interested in knowing more about sharks.  It has got over 40 years of experience in prevention of shark attacks and the staff act as consultants throughout the world. It is interesting to note that NSB is the only organisation of its kind in the world, dedicated towards promotion and conservation of sharks, besides protecting beach users from shark attacks.
  • BAT Centre
    The BAT (Bartel Arts Trust) Centre is a must-see place for artists and for those who enjoy creativity. This art and culture community centre promotes the local talents and skills of South Africa. It's been a favourite venue for holding workshops and seminars on music, acting, visual arts, literature and related fields.
  • Indian Spice Market
    Durban has a got a huge spice market on Victoria street, which is famous for good quality Indian spices. Durban has the largest Indian population living outside India and thus, it has got a strong presence of eastern culture in its cuisine.  

Things and Sports to Do:

Besides relaxing at the beaches, tourists can take a cruise from Durban Harbor and enjoy the beautiful views of the ocean. Other activities include trout-fishing, taking an adventurous flight along the Dolphin Coast in a microlight, and visiting the Da Gama Clock, a memorial to the historic discovery of the place by the explorer Vasco Da Gama.

For shoppers the Gateway theatre of shopping, simply called the Gateway, is the place to head for. This is one of the  largest shopping centres in the southern hemisphere and the biggest in South Africa. It is located on Umhlanga Ridge in Umhlanga, north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Gateway can boast of  having 18 movie theatres, an IMAX theatre, more than sixty restaurants, over 300 stores, and a theme park called Fantasy Forest.

Geography and Climate:

Durban enjoys a mild sub-tropical climate with warm wet summers and somewhat moist winters. The place does not see snowfall or frost. However, due to large differences in altitude, some areas experience great cold in the winter.

Durban is known for its warm summers and mild winters, with 15°C being the average temperature. Taking this into account, one can say that the city of Durban can be visited year round, since there are no extremes in temperature.

  • Although Durban is a walkable city, traveling in buses is mostly preferred. There are several bus services like Baz Bus, which specialises in backpacker's door-to-door travel and the Mynah Bus, which runs between the north and south beaches at frequent intervals.
  • Other options include traveling in cabs, rented cars, mini bus taxis, rickshaws and tuk-tuk, a 3 wheeled vehicle.
  • Durban is well connected to all the major countries of the world, through air.
