Introducing this place:

Town Novo mesto is one of the eleven Town Municipalities in Slovenia. It is the regional economic and cultural centre of Lower Carniola with 202 meters height above sea level and it has a population of 41,000 inhabitants. The surface of the municipality amounts 298, 5 square kilometers and consists of 133 settlements, 10,935 houses and 220 streets (data for 2002).

The town was originally settled in Roman times and it took the name Rudolfswerd in 1365, after its founder Duke Rudolf IV of Austria.

Novo mesto is around 45 miles from capital city of Slovenia (Ljubljana) and about the same from the capital city of Croatia (Zagreb). The main industries are Chemical and Automotive.

Even of its small area, you will find quite a lot of things to do. From clubs, restaurants, cinema to golf, horse ridding and other sports or other things. It is a safe and peaceful place. Most young people speak English and you can find easy to get some advice or tips.

Sightseeing:

Novo mesto has some nice places to see. If you are looking for natural surroundings you will find here some nice peaceful corners and sights. Some of the more remarkable of them are Gorjanci, Luknja, Krka river, Sequoia on Ruperč vrh, The Castle Grounds of Otočec, Lower stream of river Temenica etc. You can visit http://www.novomesto.si/en/turizem/znamenitosti/narava/ to read more about all of them.

For those who like to see buildings you can find many castles near Novo mesto. Most of them are from the 13th century. Some of them were pulled down during 2nd world war but they were repaired.

Things and Sports to Do:

Novo mesto offers various things and sports to do. From skying, horse ridding, fishing to fitness, boating and other sports.

Near the bus station is a sport centre where you can find athlete stadium, football and tennis playground. Also in Loka, which is just some walking steps down of the centre, you will find basketball and skate playground together with a running and walking path.

In Sevno is a horse ridding club with 50 horses. The fitness club is located in Košenice and offers various modern devices and is open every day in the week.

In Otočec you can find a club Space Club, tennis playgrounds, casino, camping area and golf (see also section Otočec below).

If you visit Novo mesto in winter time, you can also go skiing to Ski centre Bela. The Ski centre Bela is located in Gače near Novo mesto and Semič.

To spent more time in nature the river Kolpa is a nice place. (see section below about Kolpa).

For young people who like the nights you will find some great pubs in Bršljin, in the centre of Novo mesto and in the old part of the town. Some kilometers away from Novo mesto, in Otočec, you can also find a night club.

Restaurants and Shopping:

The shopping centre of the town is in Bršljin where you can find all kinds of stores. From sport specialized to mostly all other important specialized shops. Anyway also in the center of town are many shops which offer goods of global or local trade marks. In the old part of the town is also a market hall.

Restaurants are among all the town. There are also four Chinese restaurants near or inside the town. If you like Mexican food you also won’t be disappointed. But the recommendation is to try some traditional Slovene food. You won't find it hard to find a restaurant which offers some traditional meals. m

People and Culture:

Novo mesto has a population of 41,000 inhabitants. Most of them have Slovene origin. There are also also immigrants from Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia and Albania and also the group of the Roma Ethnic Community.

People speak the Slovene language with accent of Lower Carniola. Most of young people speak also English, many older people speak also the German language.

Geography and Climate:

Lower Carniola of which Novo mesto is the center, is located in southeastern Slovenia. It is a hilly landscape among the river Krka and its subsidiary stream. The area is a touch between the Alps and Pannonian plain.

Economy, Prices and Living Standard:

Dolenjska region of which the center is Novo mesto, is one of the most propulsive parts of the national economy, as it exceeds national averages in all of the main pointers: the economy, profitability, and revenues. The biggest employers in Novo mesto are pharmacy company Krka and car manufacturer Revoz (Renault company).

Unemployment rate in Dolenjska region in 2005 was 7,8%. The average gross wage in 2003 was 1100 EUR and the minimum wage in 2009 is 538 EUR.
