It used to be the capital city of the country until 1960. Although, every nook and corner of this coastal city is breathtaking there are still some special places of interest.

  • Christ the Redeemer- This huge statue of Jesus Christ is the symbol of Rio de Janeiro. Stating on a 2300 feet high mountain, this is a true architectural marvel.
  • Pão de Açúcar – These are two mountains also known as the Sugar Loaf Mountains. You can take the tramway to the peaks and observe the mesmerizing views.
  • Paço Imperial: Built in 1743, this Imperial Palace is rich in beautiful colonial architecture.
  • Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas – This one is a huge lagoon that provides some fantastic scenes towards Corcovado and Leblon beaches. You can also skate and jog in the fields surrounding this lagoon.
  • Candelaria Church – This Neoclassic cathedral has amazing architecture and is one of the most prominent cathedrals in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Museums: Don’t miss the various museums in this city like Museu Histórico Nacional, Museu do Carnaval, Centro Cultural Telemar and Museu Casa do Pontal.

People of Rio de Janeiro or Rio as it is popularly known as, are extremely warm and fun loving. This city is famous for its happening culture. Parties are not just for entertainment in this city, but a way of life.

People are extremely warm and friendly which is evident in their fun loving and humorous way of communication. Rio de Janeiro is the centre of Brazilian culture and no other city in the country demonstrates it like people in Rio de Janeiro do. Music and dance is an integral part of its culture, but people that are living in that part of the country are also extremely religious and believe in God.

Geography and Climate:

Lying at the 22 degrees 54˝ Latitude and 43 degrees 12˝Longitude, Rio de Janeiro is spread in a total area of around 1,182 sq. km. The city has many mountains and a long coastal line that is allocated on the coast of Atlantic.

The climate of Rio de Janeiro is tropical. The climate remains warm and humid through out the year. During winter time, temperature remains above 15 degrees C , and in summer time, the temperature remains around 35 degrees C to 40 degrees C.

Economy, Prices and Living Standard:

Rio de Janeiro is the second most important economy for Brazil after São Paulo. It has a major marine port and an international airport, which makes it a preferred location for different industries. Food, textile, petroleum, furniture and pharmaceutical are some of the major industries in this city. Tourism is also an extremely important industry and many people rely on the steady inflow of tourists for their living.

Most people are not extremely rich and there are many sectors which are highly underdeveloped. The standard of living is average as many of Rio’s citizens are forced to live under the poverty line.
