Introducing this place:

Shanghai is the largest city in China in terms of population and one of the largest cities in the world, with over 20 million people.

The opening up pf China plus economic reforms in 1990 helped development and financing in Shanghai, and in 2005 Shanghai became the world's busiest cargo port.

Shanghai is now an emerging destination for international tourism,  with respected historical landmarks such as the Bund and Xintiandi, its modern and ever-expanding Pudong skyline including the Oriental Pearl Tower, and its new reputation as a truly cosmopolitan center of culture and design. Shanghai is also the largest center of commerce and finance in China outside of Hong Kong, and has been described as the "showpiece" of China, and it's booming economy.

Economy, Prices and Living Standard:

The Chinese economy is strong currently with large growth, even through the global recession. Shanghai is a symbol both of the old and new China, with some rich locals pulling prices up, whilst others still live on very low incomes.

As a westerner in Shanghai i find life quite expensive, even having moved here from London, but for those who only do traditionally Chinese past times, it remains a cheap place to live.
