Turjak castle is in a way a cradle of Slovene literature. It is a birthplace-and working place- of protestant theologian, writer and translator of the Bible - Jurij Dalmatin (1547-1589). His sanctuary during the hard era against the protestantism was the castle chapel.
The old castle stood below the present building. Present castle was first mentioned in 1220 as Owersperch, owned by the family Auersperg.
The castle was heavily damaged in the WW2 in 1943. A part of the castle had been renovated, it's once glowing beauty is still to be felt immensely, especially the outside majestic structure.
Despite the renovation works still to be completed, castle and the old chapel with the beautiful frescoes and the hidden chamber of Jurij Dalmatin captures the visitor's eye.
ANNO DOMINI 1067 IAR IST
AVRSPERG DVRCH HERN CONRAT
VON AVRSPERG ANGEFANGEN
PAVN NACHMALS DVRCH DEN ERT
PVDEM IM 1511 IAR ZERSCHVT

AVRSPERG OBRISTN ERB CAMRER
IN CRAIN VNMD DER WIDISCHEN
MARK IN GRVND
ABGESPROCEHN VND VON NEVEN ANGEFANGEN ZV
PAVEN IM 1520 IAR
V zadnjih letih grad temeljito obnavljajo. V njem organizirajo tudi poroke.
1. septembra 2006 je bilo v gradu s strani mednarodnega reda Ordo Supremus Militaris Templi Hierosomilitani Universalis razglašeno veliko priorstvo Neodvisnega reda vitezov templjarjev Slovenije.
V okolje gradu Turjak je France Prešeren postavil eno svojih pesnitev, »Turjaško Rozamundo«:
Hrast stoji v turjaškem dvóri,
vrh vzdiguje svoj v oblake,
v senci pri kamnitni mizi
zbor sedi gospode žlahtne,
ker Turjačan spet gostuje
Rozamundine snubače.
